Women have only been able to secure Sh44 billion worth of tenders against a set target of Sh400 billion, Public Service, Youth and Gender Affairs Cabinet Secretary Sicily Kariuki has said.
Speaking at Safaricom Stadium-Kasarani during the Joyful Women Organisation (JOYWO) annual conference, Mrs Kariuki called on more women to come forward and benefit from the tenders.
“We have performed poorly in terms of awarding tenders to women. We call upon them to come forward and apply for government tenders,” said the Cabinet Secretary.
She cautioned against harassment of women who compete with men saying such behaviour will not be tolerated.
Deputy President William Ruto speaking at the same event said every woman in Kenya will be given an opportunity to do business with the government.
“We still have a challenge for women to do business with the government and we ask them irrespective of where they come from or related to, to tap the opportunity,” said the DP.
President Uhuru Kenyatta said his administration appreciates the critical role played by women in the society noting that it’s through his government that he appointed women into senior leadership positions.
President Kenyatta announced a donation of Sh20million to the group that is led by Mrs Rachel Ruto, wife to Deputy President, to support their activities.
