Mombasa civil societies want Fazul Mahamed removed from the NGO’s Coordination Board as “he has no capacity” to be executive director.
More than 23 organisations in the county say acting Interior CS Fred Matiang’i should immediately crack the whip on the “fraudulent” Fazul.
They issued a joint statement on Wednesday stating it is unfair for Matiang’i to toughen his stand on education matters while Fazul is in office “illegally”.
The groups said Fazul has not attained the minimum academic qualifications for holding such a post.
“All we are seeing is a character who has little knowledge on how NGO’s ought to operate. He is only acting on orders to frustrate some of us who have been critical of the Jubilee regime,” read the statement.
The societies further said the government should refrain from taking administrative measures against any NGO and comply with all provisions of international instruments to which they are signatories.
“We denounce any form of harassment on NGOs. This is only meant to prevent them from carrying out their mandate.”
The societies also noted the “suspicious timing” of the board’s crackdown, saying it may want to influence to influence election monitoring reports.
Earlier today, ICPC said the crackdown is chilling and sets a dangerous precedent.
Executive director Ndung’u Wainaina noted attacks on civil society are not only unconstitutional but also declarations of ferocious political warfare against freedom of expression, dissent and political rights.

Matiang’i has directed the NGO’s Board to halt the de-registration of Kenya Human Rights Commission KHRC and Africa Center for open Governance AfriCog.
He issued the directive in the morning following a raid by police and Kenya Revenu Authority agents at AfriCOG’s Lavington premises in Nairobi.
The minister said a review of the two organisations’ compliance status must be undertaken before any action against them.
