Opinion: It’s time to take action against Moses Kuria

Gatundu South Member of Parliament Moses Kuria is the embodiment of irresponsible and inflammatory talk at political rallies and his object of attack is invariably Opposition leader Raila Odinga, with whom he has never been able to see eye to eye.

The legislator has several times been captured on camera uttering obscenities and urging his followers to lawlessness. The National Cohesion and Integration Commission (NCIC) was set up with the aim of ensuring individuals of Kuria’s ilk and temperament are brought to heel and that national reconciliation and healing is forever be our guiding light.

When Uhuru failed to get his way

However, NCIC has proved to be inept in handling individuals who derive satisfaction from polarising the country through irresponsible talk, the kind that Kuria has become notorious for. As a perfunctory gesture, NCIC has several times summoned Kuria for interrogation, yet he has always walked away with only a slap on the wrist.

That has set a dangerous precedent that other leaders can exploit to perpetrate hate among Kenyans.

So audacious is Kuria that he was recently captured on camera claiming jail was made for people, that the prospects of being jailed do not bother him. And such a person claims to a national leader. There is no provision for sacred cows in our Constitution and the police must get out of their lethargy and act on Kuria and other such inciters.

NCIC must live up to its billing lest it be seen as an unnecessary drain on the exchequer. If something is not done about Moses Kuria and his cohorts, this country will one day wish it had acted when the opportunity to do so existed.
