Nyeri Mortuary gets green light to bury unclaimed bodies

The court has granted the county’s main mortuary permission to dispose of some 12 unclaimed bodies, which have been lying uncollected for as long as a year.

The facility, which has the capacity to hold 24 bodies at a time, had been struggling under the pressure of an ever increasing number of unclaimed bodies.

Chief Magistrate Wendy Kagendo allowed the county to dispose of the bodies as nobody had raised objections.

County Public Health Officer Irene Ndigirigi had issued notices to the public and the police on the impending burial. Out of the 12 uncollected bodies, seven were taken to the morgue by police.
