- The opposition legislators rejected the nine Cabinet nominees insisting that they neither recognize Uhuru Kenyatta’s presidency nor his capacity as the appointing authority.
- The nominees had already been approved by the National Assembly’s Committee for Appointment.
National Super Alliance (NASA) Members of Parliament on Wednesday afternoon walked out as the debate on the suitability of Cabinet Secretary nominees started. The opposition legislators rejected the nine Cabinet nominees insisting that they neither recognize Uhuru Kenyatta’s presidency nor his capacity as the appointing authority. The nominees had already been approved by the National Assembly’s Committee for Appointment.
However, the House requires a quorum of just 50 members to debate and vote to officially adopt the Cabinet nominees and pave way for their swearing in which will be done on Friday, February 16.
In a report tabled in the House on Monday, the Appointments Committee cleared the nominees, and termed them competent to undertake duties in their respective dockets that the President allocated them. The legislators can adopt the committee report in totality or reject it. They can also amend the report and decline the nomination of any Cabinet Secretary.
Alternatively, Jubilee lawmakers during a parliamentary group meeting held at State House, Nairobi, on Monday, resolved to use their numbers in the House to push through the committee report, and pave the way for the nominees’ formal appointment by the president and subsequent swearing in on Friday.
The opposition coalition started the narrative of not recognizing Uhuru as a legitimately elected president since August 8th general election when they claimed they were robbed of their victory. What followed after was a court order for fresh elections that the opposition boycotted due to credibility reasons. The October 26th poll which declared Uhuru as President has since been rejected by the opposition.
The opposition vowed to give Uhuru Kenyatta hard time by resisting everything that the Jubilee regime does. This includes opposing everything proposed by the Jubilee side in both the National Assembly and the senate although it is an advantage to them as they got quorum for whatever motion they want approved.
