A man was remanded for five days by a Mombasa court after being charged with impersonating an officer from the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC).

Senior Resident Magistrate Lilian Lewa granted the prosecution’s request to place Wesley Kipkemoi Kiptanui in remand at the Nyali Police Station pending completion of investigations by EACC.

The suspect was arrested at Maasai Hotel in Nyali on June 2. The court heard that Mr Kiptanui had threatened and intimidated public officers with arrest before extorting money from them.

John Ngiro, an EACC officer, said during the arrest, Kiptanui was found in possession of several ATM cards whose transactions the commission planned to investigate.

The matter will be mentioned on June 12.
