Uhuru Kenyatta has been inaugurated (on 28th November 2017) following a presidential repeat election that was ordered by the Supreme Court of Kenya after it found anomalies with the original exercise. The repeat election (conducted on 26th October 2017) was shunned by Uhuru’s main opponent Raila Odinga and his consequential withdrawal from the race due to irreducible minimums set by the NASA coalition.
NASA has also made it stark clear that they will not recognize Uhuru Kenyatta as a legitimate president which leaves a lot to be desired. The decision by Uhuru Kenyatta and his Deputy William Ruto to go ahead with an exercise that was largely viewed as sham and fallacious by most Kenyans, the International Community and the opposition has left Jubilee regime quite exposed and this was further manifested during the coronation exercise at Kasarani Stadium.
Even though the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and State House operatives went out of their way to legitimize the exercise by ensuring attendance of international dignitaries and manipulating mainstream media into hoodwinking Kenyans, the absence of major democracies in Africa and the world at large was not missed. The international community does not believe that the elections were conducted accordingly and this became quite clear from the list of inauguration attendees and even countries that sent congratulatory messages to Uhuru Kenyatta.
The main guests at the coronation ceremony was composed of people who are known to mutilate every sense of democracy to achieve and stay in power and leaders who loathe any kind of opposition in their respective states, it gives an inkling of the kind of leadership that Uhuru and his Deputy William Ruto recognize and embrace. Like the old adage goes ‘show me your friends and I will show you who you are.’
The inauguration of Uhuru Kenyatta also exposed the empty political rhetoric by the same people who are charged with the responsibility and duty to unite Kenyans. The remarks by Uhuru Kenyatta himself, the Deputy President William Ruto and some of the leaders in attendance on peace and unity is but a mere charade by the leadership to appease the international community and in extension try and legitimize a flawed process.
It beats all logic not to allow NASA to hold a normal rally in public space which is a right protected by the constitution but take to the podium and talk of peace while the police under their command are killing and harassing innocent citizens, a stone throw away from the event. This shows how Uhuru Kenyatta and his brigade have mastered the art of infidelity to the constitution they purport to protect.
Finally, there are clear signs that Kenya is on the path to dictatorship and electoral processes are but mere confirmation of handpicked leaders through tribal gerrymandering. The August elections which were shoddily conducted by the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC), the repeat election which was conducted by the same IEBC with tainted repute despite calls for a better and inclusive process, and the clampdown on opposition is sign enough of the treacherous path the country is trudging purposefully along.
At this stage there is no difference between Kenya, once the beacon of democracy in Africa, and other countries within the continent that have not known democracy. Kenyans must rise and defend the constitution before its too late because Uhuru Kenyatta is now exposed and his pernicious intentions clear as day.
