Eldoret Express bus full of passengers trapped in flooded river

A bus full of passengers, who were travelling to Lokichar in Turkana County is stuck in the middle of a flooded river.

At least 14 passengers have climbed to the roof while the fate of others is unknown.

In a statement, the National Disaster Management Unit (NDMU) Communications Director Pius Masai said the Eldoret Express Bus was heading to Lokichar when the driver tried to cross a seasonal river at Kalomorok.

He said the police are unable to reach the passenger due to strong currents.

“OCS Kainuk Police Station and his officers are at the scene but cannot access the passengers due to the strong current,” he said.

Mr Masai said a bridge on the Kitale-Kainuk road is also impassable following heavy rains.

“We are warning motorists and members of the public using or who may intent to use roads within that region to take precaution,” he said.

Heavy rains have been pounding several parts of the country.

Kenya Meteorological Department recently that are expected in several parts of the country until Sunday.

In its latest forecast covering October 17 and 23, which was released on Monday, the weatherman says Siaya, Kisumu, Homa Bay, Migori, Kisii, Nyamira, Trans Nzoia, Baringo, Uasin Gishu, Elgeyo-Marakwet, Nandi, Laikipia, Nakuru, Narok, Kajiado, Kericho, Bomet, Kakamega, Vihiga, Bungoma and Busia counties are expected to experience afternoon showers and thunderstorms.
