CS Matiang’i says county education heads to be sacked over extra fees

Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang’i has warned that county directors of education who fail to crack down on school heads who flout fee guidelines will be sacked.

The Education CS said the county education bosses have failed to enforce fee guidelines, especially in secondary schools.

“Parents are crying everywhere that they are being charged high fee above what is in the guidelines yet the county directors are keeping quiet. They must be colluding with the principals to exploit the

parents,” he told teachers and at St Peter’s Gathuthuini Secondary School in Kirinyaga County. He was accompanied by Interior Principal Secretary Karanja Kibicho.

He said he will soon start visiting schools countrywide to check if the guidelines are followed.

“I’m putting the directors on notice. They must enforce the fee guidelines or be fired,” Dr Matiang’i said.

Each student in a boarding secondary schools is supposed to pay Sh53,000 per year but majority of institutions are forcing parents to pay as much as Sh70,000.

He noted that some principals were making the matter even worse by asking parents to pay examination fee for their children.

“The government pays examination fee but some principals are asking parents to pay more money. This is madness and those responsible will face disciplinary action,’” he said Dr Matiang’i.

At the same time the CS cautioned teachers against caning children as a disciplinary measure.

He maintained that corporal punishment is outlawed and teachers found caning children will be relieved of their duties and prosecuted.
