Chief Justice fires 11 magistrates over graft

Chief Justice David Maraga on Thursday sacked 11 magistrates for corruption, misconduct and underperformance.

The magistrates of different cadres are among 15 who had been interdicted and whose disciplinary proceedings had been instituted earlier this year.

Three other magistrates and two judicial staff are still under investigation, while one has been reinstated.

“The nature of complaints against them ranged from corruption, impropriety, incompetence, misconduct and delays in the delivery of judgments among others,” the Chie Justice said.

He said the commission, while exercising the powers of disciplinary control, took into account the fundamental principles of natural justice and accorded all the accused the opportunity to be heard on the respective complaints.

“The complaints were considered and oral and written responses from the officers heard,” CJ Maraga said in the statement sent to newsrooms.

The names of the magistrates were, however, not revealed in the statement.
