Check your voter registration details via SMS portal

, NAIROBI, Kenya, Jun 29 – Voters can now check their registration status by sending their ID or passport numbers to Short Message Service number 70000.

The Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) unveiled the messaging platform Thursday, two days after unveiling an audited register with 19.6 voters nationwide.

Voters who wish to check their status including details of the polling station they are registered to vote are required to use National Identity Card or passport numbers depending on which document they used to register as voters.

Commission Chairperson Wafula Chebukati indicated on Tuesday that 88,602 records of deceased persons had been expunged from the register which initially had 19,647,835 voters.

Chebukati further said that 40,883 polling stations had been identified to serve “not more than 700 voters each” the polling day – August 8.

The register of the 19,611,423 voters unveiled by the commission on Tuesday indicates that Nairobi County has the highest number of voters standing at 2,250,853 followed by Kiambu (1,180,920) and Nakuru (949,618).

Another eight counties have over half a million voters joining the league of vote-rich counties.

They are Kakamega (743,739), Meru (702,480), Machakos (620,254), Mombasa (580,223), Bungoma (559,850), Kisii (546,580), Kisumu (539,210) and Kilifi (508,068).

The removal of the records of deceased voters was done in line with an audit conducted by KPMG.
