Catholic priest ran secret bank accounts for disputed hospital

A Catholic priest embroiled in a mission hospital ownership dispute with a group of nuns secretly opened new bank accounts for the facility.

Father William Charles Fryda and the Assumption Sisters of Nairobi are facing off in court over the ownership of St Mary’s Mission Hospital.

Yesterday, Sister Maria Felix Mwikali, former Assumption Sisters of Nairobi Superior General told the court that Father William Charles Fryda was among the three signatories to an account opened at Barclays Bank of Kenya to run of the Hospital’s operations.

Sr Mwikali said that Fr Fryda, who was registered as the facility’s treasurer with Benedict Kaida as the chairperson and Sister Christine Munguti as the general bursar, later went on to open other bank accounts which the two signatories were not aware of and could not access.

Mwikali said the Sisters had to open other bank accounts to run normal operations of the hospital.

She told the court that the idea of starting St Mary’s Mission hospital came after a long wait to inherit Nazareth Mission Hospital from Consolata Sisters whose handing over took longer than anticipated.

The congregation then decided to start its own hospital.

Several donors, including the Assumption Sisters and Maryknoll Fathers and Brothers (which Fryda is a member) contributed towards the project that was approved by the then Archbishop Ndingi Mwana Nzeki.

Other donors included Franciscan Funds Mission from USA, Sisters of Mercy and International Foundation in New Jersey among others.
