[VIDEO] One killed, three injured in Mombasa-Malindi highway accident

One person was killed and three injured when a matatu collided with a lorry on Mombasa-Malindi highway on Thursday morning.

The Roka area accident involved matatu registration KBL 202 N which was heading to Malindi from Mombasa.

It collided with a lorry ferrying sand from the opposite direction at about 6pm.

Witnesses said the lorry driver lost control and crashed into the PSV before veering off the road. He fled after the accident.

Charo Thoya, a 50-year-old deacon at New Life Centre Ministries in Chumani, died at the scene.

“The deacon died immediately after being taken out of the matatu,” said witness Elmus Tonga.

Others residents said Thoya, who lived in Roka, boarded the matatu at Chumani stage and was about to alight when the accident took place.

The matatu tout sustained serious injuries and was taken to Kilifi sub-county hospital.

“The conductor had been trapped in the wreckage,” the witness said.
