Geothermal Development Company (GDC) has set aside Sh13 million for relief food to residents in five arid and semi-arid counties.
Speaking at Maji Moto in Narok West where the firm distributed food to residents, GDC Chief Executive Johnson Nchoe said the firm has distributed 4,362 bags of beans and 1,260 bags of maize since the beginning of this year.
Energy PS Joseph Njoroge said GDC is currently undertaking studies at Mount Suswa in Narok East, which has a potential of producing 750 Megawatts.
“GDC has been tasked with setting up a geothermal project at Mt Suswa which has a huge potential which amounts to half of the country’s current power demand,” said Njoroje.
The Energy PS said the Mt Suswa geothermal project will provide reliable clean energy that will boost Kenya’s economy as well as provide job opportunities for the youth. He said geothermal energy offered hope for local economies.
“There is great opportunity for using the steam from the springs in greenhouses, drying of grains, fish farming, which will end the current food insecurity and over-dependence on livestock,” said Mr Nchoe.
