Mathira MP, Rigathi Gachagua accuses police of extortion

Mathira MP Rigathi Gachagua has called for a purge at the Karatina Police Station saying some corrupt officers have turned it into a “business enterprise”, a factor that has contributed to insecurity in constituency

He  told a  startled  gathering of  security agencies and stakeholders of  an incident on Saturday night where about 50 youths were rounded up in a swoop only to be  released later without any charges after parting with Sh1,000 each

And to support his claim he said he gave out Sh7,000 to some of the arrested youths as part of his effort gather evidence which he said he would share with the security committee.

The meeting at Karatina Members Club which was attended by Sub county commissioner Peter Thiong’o and OCPD Mathews Gwuiyo and members of the business community was convened following increasing incidents of insecurity in the area.

“There is a big problem at Karatina Police Station, It is unacceptable that my people are losing their lives and property yet no action is taken, as an MP my mandate is to ensure the security of my people,  and when I raise these issues nobody should think that I’m fighting them, I’m merely doing my job” he said

Mr Thiong’o, who is also the chairman of the security committee told residents to expect radical changes in the security situation in the next three weeks
