High Court quashes government plan to close Dadaab refugee camp

The High Court in Nairobi has quashed the plan by the government to close down Dadaab refugee camp.

Justice John Mativo ruled that Interior Cabinet Secretary Joseph Nkaissery and Ministry of Interior Principal Secretary Karanja Kibicho acted beyond their powers in issuing the directive to close down the camp.

The court also declared repatriation of refugees unconstitutional and termed it discriminative.

The judge directed the state to put into place mechanisms that ensure the department of refugees is functioning.

Gazette notices announcing repatriation of refugees were declared null and void.
