A man who was sentenced to life imprisonment for defiling a minor tried to commit suicide inside court cells just after the verdict was read out.

It took the intervention of other inmates to thwart the attempt by Evans Shitoto.

He had turned his shirt into a noose to hang himself. His fellow inmates alerted security officers who intervened and took him away.

Eldoret Resident Magistrate Emily Kigen had just read out the sentence on Friday. The court said statements of four witnesses had proved the accused person committed the offense.
