Nairobi Governor-elect Mike Sonko (pictured) on Monday told incumbent Evans Kidero not to withdraw money from county accounts or remove documents or items from offices.
He asked him to constitute a three-member committee to handle the transition.
Through J Harrison Kinyanjui and Co Advocates, Sonko directed Kidero to appoint three members by close of business yesterday. They are to work with three ppointees by the governor-elect to form the transition committee.
According to Sonko, the transition is the duo’s sole responsibility in the absence of a constitutional provision to facilitate the exercise. “Unlike the Transition Authority which was empowered under Section 7 of the Transition to Devolved Government Act No 1 of 2012 to facilitate and coordinate the transition to the devolved system of government and to undertake all functions of county government to ensure a successful transition… we lack in this instance the necessary agency to oversee the transition envisaged from yourself to our client,” says the letter.
Sonko has also asked Kidero not to withdraw any funds from the Nairobi county accounts or enter into any binding agreements with third parties.
He also directed Kidero not to remove any items or documents from City Hall or any county office. Sonko wants Kidero to disclose to his appointees to the transition committee all issues requiring his urgent attention … in default of your response by the close of business…we have instructions to seek legal redress.”
